Course Description: Students learn principles of visual design, use of sound and color, and hands-on production of text and animated resources for use in educational and training materials for the development of interactive multimedia and hypermedia lessons and presentations. The course is taught as a combination of online an on campus delivery.
Projects:
Concept Mapping:
Concept maps take information and present in graphical form. Many
students learn better when they can see the connection between different
ideas in graphical form.
*Inspiration Project #1: The first concept map I
created was designed to show a user each software title that made up the
Microsoft Office 2007 Suite and what each could be used for.
*Inspiration Project #2:
The second concept map I created was designed to help the user determine
which ribbon they can use in Microsoft Excel 2007 to find the different
tools. Office 2007 uses ribbons instead of menus and toolbars that were
present in previous versions of Office.
Animated Screen Recording: Video tutorials are beneficial
in helping people learn how to accomplish a task if they have little or
no prior knowledge of how to complete the task. Video tutorials work
well because they can provide the information in more than one way, for
example both sight and sound.
Camtasia
- Camtasia is a program that allows the user to create video
tutorials. It can be used for screen capture where the user can record
what they are doing on their screen and narrate what they are doing. In
my example, I explained the different Microsoft Office 2007 suite
software titles and how each could be used. This was my opportunity to
play with Camtasia, thus the reason for the simplicity of my video.
Photo Editing: Photo editing is a popular task due to the
popularity of digital cameras. There are many different options
when it comes to photo editing software. Two of the more popular
software programs are Fireworks and Picassa. Below are some sample
pictures that have been altered using Picasa. All of the pictures also
had their file size reduced in order to facilitate faster loading when
used on a webpage.

The picture had the soft focus format applied. The picture was compressed from 1.10KB to 39.7KB. | ||
The picture was cropped and the warmed up format applied. The picture was compressed from 1.41KB to 22.3KB. |
Video
Editing: Video editing is becoming popular and increasingly easy
to do. There are several programs that allow you to complete
editing from imovie to movie maker.
Photo Story -
I used photo story to create a video for my preschool computer students
explaining the parts of the computer, how to sit properly at the
computer, and how to log into the computer.
Sound
Editing: Sound editing is gaining popularity as users become
more interested.
Audacity - Audacity is a program that allows the user to
create an audio clip that can assist in completing an assignment or
provide direction on locating an object. I used this software to
create a relaxation clip that can be used with students who are restless
and unable to focus or teachers who are stressed.
Course Reflection: What can I say about this class...fun, fun, fun!! This course covered guidelines to follow when designing instructional materials to be presented using multimedia. I was introduced to a variety of multimedia software titles that I can integrate into instruction. After each title was introduced, time was provided to develop our ability and comfort level with the following software; Inspiration, Picasa, Camtasia, and Audacity. Some of the products I created are listed above.
